  • Unless you’re very inexperienced in dealing with credit, you should know that the easiest way to damage your score is by not making payments on time. Your credit score is dinged every time you’re late on a payment, so make it top priority to pay off all of your bills early.
  • If you’re having difficulty getting approved for some of the major credit cards, try applying for a card at a store you shop at. Many retailers have their own credit cards and are willing to be more lenient on credit scores in order to get you in the store more often. Just be vigilant in paying off any charges quickly.
  •

  • View all your credit report from all three credit bureaus at least once a year. You should always know what your score is, but this way you can also check for any mistakes, such as a payment mislabeled as being late.
  • Your balance to credit ratio is very important in your score, so while transferring all of your debt to one or two cards may seem like a good idea, you’ll only be increasing your balance to credit ratio on those cards and damaging your score. Instead, it’s better to keep several cards with lower balances on them.
  • In some cases, your credit may be damaged from a bankruptcy or foreclosure, in which case you may consider a credit repair or reestablishment service. Many people have reported success in rebuilding their credit through these companies.
